Mindfulness meditation
When we train our awareness through mindfulness meditation, we try to approach our body, our thoughts, and emotions with curiosity, openness, and acceptance to observe and be with what is already there without resistance. The intention is not to gain control of our mind, thoughts, and emotions, but to be aware of unhelpful thought patterns.
When thoughts start to wander during meditation, it is an important exercise. This is where we can become aware that we are moving from "being" to "doing" and we can try to register which bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions - which triggers - are causing us to shift our focus.
The first sign that your mind will wander might be in a body scan where you first experience that you sense your lower abdomen, but then you switch to thinking about your lower abdomen. This may lead to past experiences, worries, negative thoughts, and other interpretations, and your thoughts have now started to roam.
